UNDERSTORY, 2025

Newport, Naarm/Melbourne

Commissioned by Hobsons Bay Council

13m x 6m

The design for this mural is based on the diverse aquatic lifeforms that inhabit the Jawbone Reserve in Hobsons Bay.

The green, brown, red and coralline algae, which are often attached to the iconic basalt rocks, provide shelter for numerous species including nudibranchs and sea dragons.

The mural aims to connect local experiences and observations at Hobsons Bay to the wider Great Southern Reef ecosystem, which expands for 8,000 km across the south of Australia and Tasmania. The reef is a global biodiversity hotspot and most species found here are endemic to the region.

The mural is designed to be playful and encourage curiosity around this beautiful, local yet endangered ecosystem.

Blue is a co-author and shape-shifts across:

  • 8 photos and sketches

  • 1 short film projected at Wood Street Art Space

  • A mural and a zine that inspired the body of work

LOCAL MURAL

Ascot Vale, Naarm, 2024

4m x 3m

This mural was a commission piece that I designed for my neighbour. The river outline was drawn from satellite imagery to follow the shape of the Maribyrnong. The peaches represent the orchard that was located next door to this wall before houses were built in the area. The Willie wagtail birds are a favourite amongst locals.

FOUR RESCUE CHICKENS MURAL

Public garage door, Lewisham, 2021

Supported by local residents

Funded by LSOM

2.8m x 2.6m

I conducted two focus groups with the household and their neighbours, to gage what design they wanted for the garage.

I spent time with the rescue chickens who live behind this garage door to convey their ‘personas’. They often eat nasturtium flowers and sit near the apple tree.

I chose the orange background to match their door colour and it’s art deco sun stain glass window.
